Session on 18 November 2021 02:00 UTC - View on timetable
Social atom is a sociometric exercise that involves creating a diagram of significant rela- tionships in a person’s life. It is an excellent tool for coaches in assessing the client’s support systems in her/his eco-system. Depending on the setting, some psychodramatists/coaches like to include relationships other than people, such as places, institutions, houses, pets, money, chemical substances or food. Acknowledgment of persons, pets or places in the past may bring up unresolved grief and loss issues.
The social atom is useful in both individual and group sessions for the client to learn more about himself or herself (and the group) in several ways. The act of using paper and pencil to concretize important relationships warms the person to disruptions in social environments. The personal awareness that emerges within the client may serve as material to investigate in traditional talk-coaching or for later exploration. Regarding the atom’s usefulness to the coach and client rapport, creation of the atom can serve as a good warm-up and exploration tool.
Although the classic social atom is constructed with pencil and paper (using pencil if the client decides to make changes with erasing), social atoms can be created in many other creative ways:
Marbles, glass pebbles or shells
Photographs
Members of the team/group may take roles in the sculptures
Lego, Minecraft, soft toys
Clippings of pictures from magazines
Scarves
Tarot or oracle cards
Flower mandalas or colour mandalas
